Guanlong was an ancestor to T.Rex, and was one of the earliest Tyrannosaurs to ever have been discovered, preceding the appearance of T.Rex by about 90 million years.
Only two skeletons of Guanlong have been found, and both died in the same way, at the same time. Both creatures fell into a mud pit and sank into the mud after becoming trapped, preserving both specimens better than most fossils. This discovery occurred in 2002 in the Shishugou Formation at Wucaiwan, China.
The crest of Guanlong was likely used as a signal or mating display; as the crest itself was far too weak for fighting or defense.
Guanlong resembles its close relative, Dilong. But, Guanlong steals the family fame since they were featured in the movie, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
