Saurosuchus was one of the largest carnivorous reptiles during the late Triassic. However, it was NOT a dinosaur! While closely related to dinosaurs, this animal was actually an ancestor to modern crocodilians and is part of the group called Loricata, which includes all living and prehistoric crocodilians.
Saurosuchus was an apex predator, and was one of the largest animals to live in the Triassic. In fact, Saurosuchus is thought to have been the largest land predator ever that was not a dinosaur! This title is only challenged by Saurosuchus’ close relative, Fasolasuchus. With its awesome size, Saurosuchus was likely able to hunt the ancestors of long necked dinosaurs, or sauropods, such as Ingentia.
